Nicola is the current Principal and a Fellow of the Institute of Professional Investigators. She is the first woman in the organisation's history to fill the presidential role.

She speaks French, Italian, German and Spanish and heads Amsel & Co, a two-partner practice based in Manchester. She specialises in investigating alleged abuses of trademarks, patents, designs and copyright for companines involved in pharmaceuticals, food, fashion, engineering, entertainment and broadcasting.
